Math Games to try at home:

Dice Games

practice adding, subtracting, double digit adding, place value and sequencing

If you don't have dice, maybe this card game:

Try NIfty Fifty from this pdf sheet  For grade 2s this can be adapted closest to 50, or 100.  (or you could watch the video, to learn to play.)

For Grade 3s, use 6 cards, and try to build two 3 digit numbers with a sum as close as possible to 500, or 1000.

For extra reading, it appears the Grade threes can read the entire issue of the magazine, after reading their assigned piece.

For Grade 2s, they can go to Funbrain (3s can too, of course) where there is a selection of books they can use to read, freetime read, and share with their families.

Fine Arts/Music:

Mrs Noseworthy has a site for families, Cilaire Music, which you can access at your leisure.

Also, I will have art integrated into many of my lessons, but remember, Krokotak for those times when families are looking for something crafty and fun.  The link is in the middle column of this page.

P.E.

Mrs Harwood has a Cilaire Physical Education site, for body breaks, as well.

Math

For the first week or so, review of addition and subtraction of 2 and 3 digit sums.  Do a page a day, then try some of the games in the supporting links.

Independent Reading:  Tumble Book Library is available through the Vancouver Island Regional Library - I've put a link over

here.  Scroll down to the Tumble link, I can't link from this page, as the code attaches at the Library for free access. It has all levels of elementary books, and includes read-alongs, and audio stories for the scaffolding readers.

Scholastic has a great reading series set up.  All materials can be read independently, or if the children need assistance, there is a read along option.  Each day I will assign a set, along with some writing, and other  activities to complement the topics.

Grade 2 pages - view the video Spider's Journal, and read the book about spiders.  Complete the activities on the page.

Watch the video "Tricky Spiders" and take the quiz.

  - and assignments:

Wednesday:

Describe how a spider builds a web.  Use complete sentences, and words like, "first," "next," "then," and so on.  Finish with a sentence beginning with a word like "finally," or "at last."

Thursday:  Invent a Spider

Some spiders are named for how they look—like the wolf spider or the pumpkin spider.

  • Pretend you discovered a new kind of spider.

  • Draw it. (Be sure to give it eight legs, a head, and a body.)

  • Describe it in words.

  • Name it!

Grade 3 pages -  read about the hottest and coldest places on Earth.

* For parents, strong readers can just go to the magazine format, and read from there.  If the material seems too hard, there is a read-along option in the sidebar.  If it's still a challenge, there is an option to choose a simpler version.  Please do look at the magazine format, once reading though, it's easier to see the comparison between the two places.

  - and assignment:

Wednesday:  Imagine you're planning a trip to Dallol and a trip to Oymyakon. In a notebook or on a piece of paper, write out the following: a list of items

you will need to bring to each place,

what you want to see while you're

there, questions you could ask people who live there, and a plan for how you will share all of your travel memories

with your friends back home!

Thursday:  Re-read the article.  Tell how both places are different.  Tell some ways they are alike.  Get your ideas from the story!
