Math Game of the Week:

Get out your sidewalk chalk and draw a calculator on the driveway, or sidewalk to practice your math facts.  If you don't have chalk, make an alternative. If you can't do this, draw it out in dirt with a stick, or tape it out on the patio.  Practice your addition, subtraction, and multiplication - hop out the questions, and the answers.

Reading and Responding

This week we are working on the theme Community and Families.  The activities and stories will show some of life around the world, and some of life around health.

I cannot direct link to the files, unfortunately, so here are the steps:

Click this image  - once you do, you will see this same image on the page, just click it again.

When you get in you will get a menu of images.  We are going to this one, all week:

And today, we are going to read these two books.  One is a video read along, and the other is a book.  (count down 8 rows, set two).  Talk about what you learned about eating, around the world, with an adult.  Which was your favourite?

After you have read visit Kidsweb Japan to learn to use chopsticks.

Use this poster to help you write about your dream pizza.

Start with the opening "My dream pizza would______"  Tell about it, what would be on it.  What are your favourite toppings?  How big would it be?  Would you share it?  How would you eat it?  Use your imagination, and enjoy writing about your pizza.  When you are done, draw a picture of your pizza.

Writing:

Do this first: Use the questions from this sheet (click the image) to answer what you know about the heart.

Then, watch the video I've sent to your mailbox at Epic Reading

Once you have done, look at your sheet again, use the answers from the song to complete your sheet.

Talk time:  Today you read about tamales and arepas.  What ingredient is big in both treats?  Have you ever eaten these?  Would you like to?  Have you ever had cornbread, or corn chips - if you have, you will know a bit about how these treats taste.

Also, have you ever had stew?  How is Sanocho different from the stew you eat?  How is it the same?

Tell a story about your favourite food.  Why is it special?  When do you get to eat it?  How do you eat it?  Is it bought at a special store, or made at home?  Draw a picture to go with your story.

Rounding Whole Numbers Practice

Sheet 2

Remember, if the ones place is 5 or greater - round up

      50       55  ---->  60

       55 rounds up to 60.

If it already ends in zero, don't round at all.

       60  ---->  60  - it's already at             the nearest ten.

If it's four or less, round to the closer ten, round down.

       50 <----- 54           60

       54 rounds down to 50

Finally, a puzzle game, to help if you need extra practice.

Resources

A great online numberline for rounding whole numbers, advance the line by moving the blue bar along the top of the screen.  Count the distance to the nearest ten, remember if the ones place is five go to the next ten, if it's zero, the number does not need rounding.

If your child is more "hands on" try a seamstress tape, or this printable numberline.
