Grade 3 Math

Multiplication -

I have put the book, Multiply on the Fly, into your Epic Reading mailbox.

Read the book.  As you go through each page, write out the repeated addition and the multiplication sentence.  I've highlighted the examples in blue.

The first page is Fireflies.  Since it's 9 X 1, you write the repeated addition:

1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1 = 9

And for the multiplication write

9 X 1 = 9   remember, the first number is always how many groups there are.

The next is dragonflies. Write the repeated addition.

2+2+2+2+2=10

Then the multiplication

5 X 2 = 10

Continue until you finish the book.

Math Game of the week:

Math Game of the Week:

Get out your sidewalk chalk and draw a calculator on the driveway, or sidewalk to practice your math facts.  If you don't have chalk, make an alternative. If you can't do this, draw it out in dirt with a stick, or tape it out on the patio.  Practice your addition, subtraction, and multiplication - hop out the questions, and the answers.

Word Problems -

Word problems are most easily done by drawing a picture, especially for smaller numbers.

Questions and Workspace

For the activity today, the goal is showing understanding of how to represent the problem:

through a picture

or

through mathematical representation

or

both

It depends on the way your child is best able to find the answer.  They might even need to physically create the groupings with little pebbles, and then draw the problem.

Example:

Joh has 3 friends.  He wants to give each one 3 drawings.  How many drawings will Joh have to make?

Finish your novel - whichever one you are reading.

Was the problem solved?  Were you surprised by how it turned out?  What did you think about the ending?  Did you wish it was different, or did you think it turned out the way you would have liked?

Write 3 - 4 sentences about how your book ended.  Tell what you thought about the ending.  If you wish it had been different, describe what you would to have liked to have happened.

A healthy heart needs a healthy body.  Write about your favourite heart pounding activities.  Tell what you do, why you like them, and who you do them with.  If it's a game, tell a story about your best game, or competition.  Or maybe you like to run, or bike, in the woods - tell about your adventure.

If you don't have a story, make one up!  The ultimate __________.

 - rock climbing adventure

 - BMX race

 - obstacle course

Your imagination can take you anywhere!
