May the Fourth Be With You

Grade 3 Math

Multiplication - Repeated Addition

Watch the following video, to practice the strategy for multiplying - repeated addition.

Have some paper ready, so you can stop the video, and try the practice activities.

Also, there is a challenge at the end for you to try.

Now it's your turn to practice:

Beside each picture write the addition sentence first (just the green part):

4 + 4 + 4 = 12   There are 3 groups of four.

Then the multiplication sentence:

3 X 4 = 12

Practice with groups of 4

Practice with groups of 5

Writing:

Choose one of the ideas - 1 is for people who watch Star Wars, and the other is for people who would rather write about something else.

Did you dress as a Star Wars character, or draw a picture about your favourite character, or Star Wars movie scene?

Write a story about your Star Wars adventure.  Did you go somewhere in a Millennium Falcon?  Did you do something with BB8?  Maybe you had an important mission to finish!

If you don't want to write about Star Wars, it's okay!  Write a story about your own adventure.  Maybe you have an important mission in your own neighbourhood.  Is something or someone missing, and you have to find them?  What clues would you find to help you?  How do you solve the problem!  Have fun, use your imagination.

Backyard Explorations:  Science world has some good suggestions, and this activity frame to get your junior scientists out to the yard.  There are some good ideas to make the activity more challenging, and some questions to help them put their thinking caps on.

Mystery Doug has a great activity on how flowers bloom in the spring, with a new video, and hands on investigation.

The included activity has a Mother's Day project the children can complete.

Multiplication

Word Problems

*Pro Tip  - Drawing a picture to show what is happening in a story will help you solve each problem.

Example:

If each child has 2 ice-cream cones, and there are 3 children.  Draw a picture of 3 children, with two ice creams.

Now count the ice-creams:

2 + 2 + 2   = 6

3 groups of 2 is 6

3 x 2 = 6

Code Math - drag the arrows into the white boxes to "code" your robot to find the correct answer to each problem.

Addition Blocks - click 2 or more touching blocks to match the target number on the right.  How many levels can you go!

Complete this activity, where you get to create the ending!

Your "Write Your Own Ending" activity should be 50 - 75 words in length.  Of course, you can add more to it, if you like.  Use your imagination, and have fun!

Writing:

Draw a picture of a fort you have made, or a fort that you wish you could make.  Label the picture.  Tell about your fort.  Where is it, what is it made from, and what are the things that make it special?  What would you keep in your fort?  What would you do?  And who would you have over?
